Rules: 

1. Applicants may begin their journey towards earning the scholarship anytime from grade 9 onwards. All logs and documents must be dated. 

2. All documents must be labeled and signed if needed. This includes volunteer logs and events or programs held in a community center. 

3. Applicants may only apply to ONE scholarship per year. 

4. Each child of board members of Good Tree Roots cannot apply every year, but are limited to once while in high school and once while in college or the equivalent of college

NOTE: These scholarships change every year. If you begin a scholarship and it does not appear on the website in the year that you apply, you may still reach out to us for the appropriate application.

Fatima al-Fihri is best known to be the founder of the first university in the world.  Her generosity and foresight enabled others to contribute to her vision.

This year’s scholarship allows you to choose ONE of two options:

  1. History Awareness Celebration ($1,000)
    • SUBMIT: Presentation & Reflection
    • Virtual Tour: Bring to light the first university through a presentation or video
    • Research: How and why did it come to be? What other aspects of our education were born out of this tradition (diploma, robe, et cetera)?
    • Provide examples of current-day Fatima al-Fihris we can celebrate.
    • Present: Conduct a day of celebration in your local community.
    • Reflect: Write a reflection on how the participants reacted and what you realized through this experience (you may want to provide a feedback survey to event participants).
  2. Personal Connection ($500)
    • SUBMIT: Personal essay
    • Are you one of the first to attend college in your family? Or are you paving the way in a field no one else in your family has pursued?
    • Conduct interviews and reflections from other family members about their educational experiences.
    • How has your ability to pursue higher education changed your pathways in life?

Zubeida Scholarship

The Darb-e-Zubeida or the “River of Zubeida” provided safe places for pilgrims to rest and restock along a difficult path through Arabia. She is well-known for out-doing her husband, the Caliph Harun al-Rashid in her generosity.

This year choose ONE of two options in the category of volunteerism: 

  1. Carry the Legacy ($500)
    • SUBMIT: Reflection  & Volunteer log
    • Volunteer on a regular basis in one location.
    • Hours should be a minimum of 30 hours and should be signed off by the supervision of the organization or program.
    • Provide details on why you chose this organization. What was your role? How was your role as a volunteer here effective? How did you stand out or what unique skills did you bring to the organization? 
    • What were your take-aways from volunteering here?
  2. Personal project ($500)

    • SUBMIT: Reflection after Project

    • Identify an issue in the community which holds back any group of people from a dignified, decent, or comfortable experience. 

    • Improve the experience through your own project of improvement. 

    • Write a reflection which includes who you’ve helped and how it has improved the community. 

    • Relate how your experience is similar or different to the Darb-e-Zubeida.

Known as the father of robotics, al-Jazari created many contraptions and useful engineering projects. 

This year’s scholarship has ONE option:

  1. History Awareness Celebration ($1,000)
    • SUBMIT: Presentation & Reflection
    • Research: Who is al-Jazari? As the father of engineering and robotics dive deep into his contributions to the field. Provide information about his plans, his goals, and his problem-solving. 

    • Current: Equate his original works with today’s technology (whether in robotics, automobiles, or clocks, or wudhu machines, to name a few).
    •  Present: Conduct the day of celebration in your local community.
    • Reflect: write a reflection on how the participants reacted and what you learned through your experience (you may want to provide a survey of the event for participant feedback).
